December, next to November, is one of my favorite months. I love walking around at night, looking at holiday lights and drinking hot cocoa. . . or sometimes, something a little stronger. For the December Cocktail of the Month, I tried something a little different: his and her's cocktails. Both drinks used this cranberry simple syrup, but the "her's" cocktail is a holiday version of a gin & tonic (one of my favorites), and the "his" cocktail is a twist on an Old Fashion (Alex's favorite).
2.5 ounces rye whiskey
2 teaspoons cranberry simple syrup (for a stiff drink)
A few dashes of angostura bitters
Orange peel & cranberries for garnish
Combine whiskey, bitters and syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain over a rocks glass with one large ice cube. Garnish with orange peel and cranberries from syrup.
1 part gin
2 parts tonic water
1 tablespoon of cranberry simple syrup
A few rosemary leaves
Cranberries for garnish
In a cocktail shaker, combine gin, rosemary and simple syrup. Shake vigorously and strain finely over ice*. Top off with cold tonic water and cranberries.
*I used ice with cranberries and rosemary. To make fill ice cube tray half way up with water and add cranberries and rosemary. Freeze and fill the rest of the way with water. Freeze until done.
