Cocktail of the Month: Greyhound Fizz with Rosemary Sugar

Current Habits Greyhound

Happy Monday! I hope your May is off to a sun-filled start. Here in Orange County, we were blessed with hours of weekend sunshine. So this weekend I decided to sip on one of my favorite simple and refreshing cocktails, with a not-so-simple twist (but don't stop reading, it's pretty easy). Vodka and grapefruit juice is a classic cocktail, and basic for a bartender to make; in other words, great for busy bars. They're also pretty close to naturally flavored depending on the additives in the specific juice the bartender uses.

Since they're so simple to make, I decided to challenge myself and upgrade it with rosemary sugar and a splash of soda water. Now I need to plan a fun gathering to serve this cocktail at. It look elegant, but sans sweat and tears. And best of all, it's a crowd pleaser. Try it, and let me know what you think!

Ingredients (makes 1 with extra rosemary sugar)
1 Large Sprig of Fresh Rosemary
4 T. Sugar
4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (fresh squeezed is incredible)
2 oz. Vodka (your choice)
Soda Water
Ice

What to do
Begin by pulsing your rosemary and sugar in a food processor. This will take longer than you think, but keep going until the rosemary is small enough to stick to your rim without looking awkward.

Put your sugar on a flat surface or plate, dampen the rim of your glass with fresh grapefruit or grapefruit juice, and immediately dip the rim in the sugar.

Careful not to smear your rim, add a few pieces of ice to your glass.

Shake grapefruit juice, vodka and ice in a cocktail shaker, then pour into glass. You can simply add the ingredients to your glass if you'd rather stir your cocktail.

Top off with a splash of soda water and a sprig of rosemary, using the rosemary sprig to stir if you skipped the cocktail shaker.

Enjoy in the sunshine!
