3 Ideas to Help You Quit Refined Sugar

You may remember that during February I removed a few things from my diet, one of which was refined sugar. Although I'm not consuming sugar like I was before February, I'm not quite where I want to be. So while I'm being more conscious about what I'm eating, I thought I'd share 3 things that helped me quit refined sugar entirely.

Most of my "sugar cravings" happen because I'm bored or just because I feel like I need to be eating. For my real sugar cravings an apple with almond butter worked best. The popcorn is great for replacing snacks and the tea is great for my bored eating. Moderation is also key!
Apple Slices and Almond Butter
I can't eat whole apples, at least not normal sized ones. I get stomach aches for some odd reason. So I eat half an apple cut into slices with a tablespoon of almond butter (nothing added). I would eat this in the afternoon or for dessert.
Hot Tea
I love tea, so whenever I felt like I should be eating something (like while watching a movie or hanging out in the evenings) I would sip on tea instead. I usually drink a cup in the morning and at night. My favorites right now are green tea in the morning and everyday detox at night.
Stove-Popped Popcorn
A year or so ago I opened a bag of popcorn before putting it in the microwave, and what I saw totally grossed me out. I was already a fan of the stove-popped version, but now it's all I eat. I use coconut oil in my pan and play around with the flavors. I like cajun seasoning and lime juice, and I'll admit to using butter every now and then. I like this for my afternoon sugar cravings.

These might not work for everyone, but they definitely helped me, so why not give it a try? Also feel free to share any ways you've replaced sugar in your diets. I'd love to hear more suggestions!

  1. I love this post! I found your blog through the comments on another blog I read. All of these are great suggestions; I'm a huge tea lover myself and love when I come across someone else who is. Also almond butter, yes yes yes. I need to get back into the stove-cooked popcorn; I used to years ago and then went back to the easy microwave version, but now I'm intrigued and I'm going to cut open an unpopped bag myself -- I know if I see something horrific it will keep me sticking to the stovetop for the rest of forever!

  3. Love this! I did a sugar detox about a year ago and was doing great up until two months in when I thought I could have just one brownie...well that pretty much ruined it for me. I really need to work on cutting sugar out again. Thanks for these great tips!

  8. I love eating apple slice with peanut butter (I'm not a big almond butter fan). That popcorn is making me want popcorn now!

    1. I wasn't an almond butter fan at first, but now I can't do peanut butter! It's definitely not for everyone though.
